Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted the growing global popularity of Yoga ahead of the commencement of the 1st World Yogasana Sports Championship 2026 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the championship, which begins on June 4, has brought together Yoga enthusiasts from across the world and marks a significant milestone in the global sporting journey of Yogasana.
He noted that the event reflects the increasing acceptance and recognition of Yoga on the international stage. The championship is expected to witness participation from athletes and practitioners representing several countries, showcasing Yogasana as a competitive sport.
Prime Minister Modi also announced that he will join the event virtually at around 6:40 pm on June 4. He congratulated the organisers for hosting the innovative initiative and extended his best wishes to all participants.
“Yoga is gaining tremendous popularity across the world. This platform has brought together Yoga enthusiasts from around the world and is a significant milestone on the global sporting roadmap for Yogasana,” the Prime Minister said.
The World Yogasana Sports Championship is aimed at promoting Yogasana as a competitive discipline while encouraging greater international participation in Yoga-based sporting events. The championship is also expected to strengthen India’s role in advancing Yoga as a global movement rooted in wellness, discipline and cultural heritage.
The event comes ahead of the International Day of Yoga, observed annually on June 21, and is expected to further boost awareness and engagement with Yoga across countries.
