Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced a Rs 150 crore flood mitigation project for Jorabat as part of the proposed Guwahati Ring Road, saying the initiative aims to provide a long-term solution to recurring flash floods in the area.
The announcement came during the Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, where Sarma said the recent flash floods in Jorabat, which inundated several localities and disrupted traffic, highlighted the need for permanent engineering measures instead of temporary relief.
According to the Chief Minister, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Guwahati Ring Road has earmarked Rs 150 crore specifically for flood control works in Jorabat. He said consultants are preparing technical designs for the project and have been instructed to secure approval from IIT Guwahati before implementation to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the proposed measures.
Sarma expressed confidence that the project would substantially reduce the risk of flash flooding in Jorabat once completed.
Addressing the area’s persistent traffic congestion, the Chief Minister said Jorabat has become one of Assam’s busiest transport corridors due to its location on the Assam-Meghalaya border and the growing volume of vehicular movement.
To ease congestion, the state government has proposed widening the Digaru-Narangi road into a four-lane highway. The upgraded route is expected to provide an alternative approach for vehicles travelling from Jagiroad and nearby areas to Guwahati, reducing pressure on the Jorabat junction.
Sarma also urged legislators from the Dimoria and Dispur Assembly constituencies to support land acquisition and other requirements needed for the road expansion project.
The measures are part of the Assam government’s broader plan to strengthen urban infrastructure in the Guwahati metropolitan region through improved transport connectivity, better drainage systems, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
