Government enforces anti-doping laws to strengthen clean sport framework

The Centre has notified the commencement of the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Act, 2025, significantly strengthening India’s legal and institutional framework to combat doping in sports and align the country’s anti-doping regime with global standards.

According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the enforcement of the two Acts provides a comprehensive statutory framework to prevent doping in sports, protect athletes’ rights and uphold the integrity of sporting competitions in accordance with internationally accepted anti-doping norms.

The legislation aligns India’s anti-doping framework with the World Anti-Doping Code and fulfils the country’s commitments under the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport.

The Ministry said the new legal framework strengthens institutional independence, enhances procedural safeguards, streamlines dispute resolution mechanisms and reinforces the credibility and effectiveness of India’s anti-doping programme.

The Acts provide statutory backing for anti-doping measures across all sports by establishing a comprehensive legal framework governing testing, results management, education, intelligence gathering and investigations. They also seek to improve transparency, accountability and due process while safeguarding the rights of athletes.

The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Act, 2025 further strengthens the governance structure by enhancing institutional autonomy and bringing India’s anti-doping system into closer alignment with evolving international best practices.

According to the Ministry, the amendments are aimed at improving the effectiveness, fairness and credibility of anti-doping administration in the country.

The Ministry said the enforcement of the Acts reflects government’s commitment to creating a transparent, fair and athlete-centric anti-doping ecosystem. It added that the strengthened legal framework would reinforce India’s resolve to promote integrity, fair play and excellence in sports while ensuring that Indian athletes compete on a level playing field at both the national and international levels.
