Indian Railways has approved a ₹175-crore infrastructure project to create additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed in Raipur under the South East Central Railway (SECR), in a move aimed at strengthening maintenance infrastructure and supporting the rapid expansion of its electric locomotive fleet.
The project is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to augment maintenance capacity in line with the growing number of electric locomotives and increasing freight and passenger traffic across the railway network.
A homing facility refers to the designated locomotive shed where a locomotive is assigned for scheduled maintenance, safety inspections, repairs and overall upkeep. The homing shed serves as the primary maintenance base, ensuring that locomotives remain safe, reliable and operationally efficient.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the additional homing facilities at the Raipur depot will optimise the utilisation of existing infrastructure while creating the necessary capacity to accommodate future fleet expansion and technological upgrades.
The project is expected to enhance the maintenance capability of the Raipur shed, improve operational efficiency and support Indian Railways’ continued transition towards a modern, fully electrified railway network.
The infrastructure augmentation is also expected to strengthen the Railways’ ability to meet rising transportation demand by ensuring the timely maintenance and deployment of electric locomotives across the network.
