Indian Railways has approved a ₹206-crore project to deploy Kavach Version 4.0, its indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, across 680 route kilometres of the Northern Railway network, further strengthening rail safety and operational efficiency.
The project will cover the Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda sections, along with their feeder branch lines under the Delhi Division of Northern Railway.
The initiative forms part of Indian Railways’ nationwide rollout of Kavach, aimed at expanding the indigenous train protection system across high-density and strategically important rail corridors.
Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system designed to significantly enhance railway safety by preventing Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and reducing the risk of train collisions. The system continuously monitors train movements and automatically applies brakes whenever required to ensure safe operations.
In addition to improving safety, Kavach enables trains to operate at their maximum permissible speeds while supporting reliable operations even under adverse weather conditions such as dense fog.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 on these key routes will strengthen passenger and freight safety, improve operational efficiency, enhance the reliability of train services and facilitate faster, technology-driven railway operations.
The latest approval marks another significant step in Indian Railways’ efforts to modernise its safety infrastructure through indigenous technology while supporting the growing demand for safe, efficient and dependable rail transportation across the country.
