Rijiju, Chouhan visit flood-hit Arunachal Pradesh, assure Centre’s full support

Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday visited flood-affected areas in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district to assess the damage caused by heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides, and assured all possible assistance from the Centre.

The ministers reviewed the situation on the ground, interacted with affected families and inspected damaged infrastructure as part of a wider tour of the flood-hit state.

Speaking to reporters, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said both Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring Assam had witnessed severe flooding after receiving more than 200 mm of rainfall in a single night.

“There has been extensive damage to roads, electricity supply and water supply systems. A detailed report will be submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Central Government will provide all necessary assistance,” he said.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described the destruction in Pasighat as widespread, saying homes, household belongings, agricultural fields and public infrastructure had suffered extensive damage.

He said the Centre and the Arunachal Pradesh government would work together to provide relief and rehabilitation to those affected.

“Under the leadership of the Chief Minister and with the guidance of the Prime Minister, both the state and Central governments will extend full support to all those affected and help them recover from this crisis,” Chouhan said.

Arunachal Pradesh has witnessed heavy rainfall, cloudbursts and flash floods over the past few days, with Keyi Panyor district among the worst affected. Several casualties have also been reported.

Earlier, Rijiju, accompanied by Chouhan and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, visited flood-hit areas in the state and assured affected families of all possible assistance.

The heavy rainfall has also caused the Leku River to overflow, triggering severe flooding in Assam’s Jonai region. More than 100 families have been affected, while houses, agricultural land and livestock have been submerged. Floodwaters also inundated National Highway 515, disrupting connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.
