At the ReWired Summit at COP28 Dubai, the official launch of Green Rising took place—a platform aiming to empower youth-led climate actions and solutions. UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited, in collaboration with India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, introduced the “Green Rising” initiative at COP28 on December 8th. Through India’s YuWaah campaign, the focus is on engaging youth in impactful environmental actions at the grassroots level, inspired by the Mission Life movement. The global “Green Rising” initiative and the “Green Rising India Alliance” involve UNICEF, Generation Unlimited, and a diverse network of public, private, and youth partners.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Bhupendra Yadav, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, highlighted the importance of youth in achieving a sustainable world. He acknowledged their vulnerability to climate change and stressed their valuable role in climate action. Underlining the need to equip them with the right knowledge and skills, he emphasized the blend of technological prowess and environmental consciousness.
Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav highlighted India’s commitment, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to a sustainable world, urging joint initiatives to build youth capacity as future climate leaders. The minister emphasized the significance of green jobs, outlining India’s communication and outreach programs to harmonize traditional and modern climate-friendly values.
India’s National Mission for Strategic Knowledge on Climate Change, under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), was mentioned, focusing on creating awareness among students and youths. The minister applauded the Green Skills Development Programme, which aims to cultivate a proficient workforce within the environment and forest sectors. The recently launched Green Credits Initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP28 was highlighted, encouraging global collaboration for pro-planet actions. The minister urged businesses to join in championing sustainable lifestyles.
Emphasizing climate resilience and adaptation measures, the minister stressed engaging young minds in climate action. He cited ‘child is the father of man,’ emphasizing a sustainable world built on the shoulders of pro-planet youth.In collaboration with UNICEF and Generation Unlimited India (YuWaah), the Government of India enabled four promising youth leaders to participate in COP28. The minister congratulated UNICEF and Generation Unlimited’s Green Rising Global Initiative, which aims to create pathways for at least 10 million children and youth in developing countries.
The minister concluded, reinforcing India’s commitment to address climate change and calling for united support in working towards a sustainable future. Co-hosted by UNICEF, Generation Unlimited, and Dubai Cares, this event formally launched The Green Rising at the RewirEd Summit. Over the next three years (2023-2025), the Green Rising initiative will create pathways for at least 10 million children and youth in developing countries, mobilizing them for grassroots action, green skills building, jobs, and entrepreneurship. Collectively, these young champions can deliver concrete environmental impact and catalyze systems-level change. Dr. Rania Al Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation, Egypt; and Dr. Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, Minister of Environment, Republic of Rwanda also participated in the Event.
