The High-Level Committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, convened its third meeting in New Delhi to examine the feasibility of simultaneous elections in the country.
Present at the meeting were key figures, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha, and Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of Law and Justice.
The Committee confirmed the minutes of its previous meeting, held on October 25, 2023, and discussed the progress made on decisions taken during that session.
Niten Chandra, the Committee’s Secretary, briefed members on follow-up actions, highlighting a significant public response. A public notice issued on January 5 garnered 20,972 responses from citizens, with 81% expressing support for simultaneous elections.
Additionally, 46 political parties were invited to share their suggestions, and responses from 17 parties have been received so far. The Committee also took note of suggestions provided by the Election Commission of India.
Headed by India’s former President, the Committee initiated consultations with jurists, former Chief Justices, former Chief Election Commissioners, and heads of prominent organizations.
The next meeting of the High-Level Committee is scheduled for January 27.
