U.S. presidential election

Early voting underway in most U.S. states ahead of presidential election

With the U.S. presidential election just days away, early voting is in full swing in most states, allowing millions of Americans to cast their ballots ahead of Election Day on November 5th. While a few states have closed early voting or do not allow it at all, the majority offer voters the convenience of voting early, either in person or by mail.

The early voting system in the U.S. is designed to make voting more accessible. Voters who are traveling or otherwise unable to vote on Election Day can take advantage of the option to cast their ballots in advance or mail them in.

Texan voter Lucas Smith expressed his satisfaction with the ease of early voting, noting that it allowed him to avoid long lines on Election Day. Kat Williams, another voter, appreciated being able to vote early while managing her schedule with her young child.

However, some voters remain cautious. Indian American voter Yogita Sharma explained that despite the convenience, the highly polarized nature of this election has made some people wary. Some fear that their early votes could be stolen or tampered with, which has discouraged a few from voting early.

Voter Path Horton shared concerns about the integrity of early voting, while Ellen Almart echoed those sentiments, pointing to the heated political climate as a reason for the uncertainty.

Initial data indicates that Republicans may be narrowing the early voting gap traditionally held by Democrats. This could be worrisome for Democrats, as mail-in votes played a crucial role in Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. However, it may also suggest that Republicans are making a stronger push to encourage their base to vote early this time around.
