Kiki Hakansson, the pioneering figure who made history as the first-ever Miss World, has passed away at the age of 95. Hakansson, who was crowned in 1951, died in her sleep on Monday, November 4, at her home in California, her family confirmed.
The news was shared through an announcement on the official Miss World Instagram account, revealing that Hakansson “went peacefully, comfortably, and well taken care of.” Her family expressed gratitude for the care she received.
Born in Sweden, Hakansson became a global icon when she won the first Miss World title at the inaugural pageant held at the Lyceum Ballroom in London on July 29, 1951. The event, initially planned as a one-time celebration for the Festival of Britain, quickly gained popularity and grew into an international institution.
The Miss World organization expressed its deep sorrow over Hakansson’s passing in a heartfelt social media tribute. The statement read, “We extend our deepest sympathies to all Kiki’s family, sending our love and offering our prayers at this difficult time.”
Her son, Chris Andersen, honored her memory, describing her as “real, kind, loving, and fun,” and praised her “brilliant sense of humour, wit, and big heart.” Andersen reflected on the warmth and generosity she showed to all who knew her, traits that he said would ensure her memory endures.
Julia Morley, Chairwoman of the Miss World organization, also paid tribute, saying, “Kiki was a true pioneer, and it was therefore fitting that she would have her place in history as the first Miss World.” Morley added that the organization would continue to celebrate Hakansson’s legacy, remembering her as an enduring symbol of grace and charm.
