Bangladesh Bank (BB) has begun printing new currency notes without the image of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Currently, all denominations of Bangladeshi currency notes feature his image.
According to the central bank, the new banknotes for Taka 20, 100, 500, and 1000 will instead feature designs showcasing religious structures, Bengali traditions, and graffiti inspired by the July uprising.
The new notes are expected to be introduced into circulation within the next six months, the bank stated.
Officials from the central bank and the Ministry of Finance have confirmed that the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be removed from existing notes. According to reports from United News of Bangladesh (UNB), this change is part of a phased redesign of all denominations.
Initially, the design of four denominations is being modified, with plans to redesign the remaining banknotes gradually, officials added.
Husneara Shikha, BB spokesperson and Executive Director, stated that the printing process is well underway. “I hope the new notes will be released into the market within the next six months,” she said.
