India condemns Mali terror attacks, expresses condolences over Defence Minister’s death

India on Tuesday strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Mali, which targeted multiple locations and resulted in significant casualties, including the death of the country’s Defence Minister.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed solidarity with the people and government of Mali. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and express our solidarity with the Government and people of Mali in this difficult time,” the MEA said in a statement.

India also conveyed condolences over the death of Sadio Camara, Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, who was killed in one of the coordinated attacks. “We also express our sincere condolences on the demise of General Sadio Camara, Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs of Mali in the terror attack. India reiterates its firm commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and supports efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region,” the MEA added.

According to reports, armed terrorist groups launched coordinated assaults on Saturday targeting several cities, including the capital Bamako, as well as Kati, Sevare, Gao and Kidal. Camara’s residence in Kati, located near Bamako, was among the targets, where he and his wife were killed.

In response, the Malian armed forces launched counter-operations. The military said that more than 100 terrorists were killed in airstrikes in the Koulikoro region during follow-up operations, after identifying a column of militants moving towards a hideout.

Amid the deteriorating security situation, the Embassy of India in Bamako issued an advisory urging Indian nationals in Mali to remain vigilant, stay indoors and follow local authorities’ instructions. The embassy said it is closely monitoring developments in coordination with Malian authorities.
