Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said Ahmedabad’s urban transformation is set to gain further momentum with the approval of Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, which will enhance connectivity, particularly to the city’s airport.
Sharing a post on X, the Prime Minister said the metro expansion would make travel faster and more convenient, while helping reduce congestion, generate employment and support sustainable urban development.
“Ahmedabad’s urban transformation is getting further momentum. The Cabinet’s approval for Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project will strengthen connectivity, particularly to the airport, thus making travel faster and more convenient. This expansion will reduce congestion, create employment opportunities and contribute to sustainable urban growth,” he said.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Modi, approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project on Wednesday. The project includes a 6.032-km corridor comprising five stations, of which four will be elevated and one underground.
According to an official release, the stations on the corridor will be Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport. The project will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 2,169.04 crore, including Interest During Construction (IDC).
Upon completion, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 km. The new corridor is expected to improve airport connectivity and provide better access to key residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient public transport links.
The project will integrate with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro corridor and is also expected to support future infrastructure requirements in the region, including areas likely to host facilities for the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030.
The government said the metro extension is expected to ease road congestion, reduce travel time and improve road safety by encouraging greater use of public transport. Enhanced connectivity to airports, railway stations and bus depots is also expected to improve mobility and support economic activity in the region.
According to the release, the expansion will provide wider access to public transport across socio-economic groups and help improve access to essential services.
The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A project is expected to generate employment for around 2,000 people during peak construction activity, while about 500 personnel are likely to be engaged during the operation and maintenance phase.
