Heavy rain likely in west Tamil Nadu with moderate showers across state

Moderate rainfall is likely across several parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, while heavy rain has been forecast for the hill regions of Coimbatore and isolated areas of the Nilgiris, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

The RMC said a trough extending from the north coastal districts of Tamil Nadu to the Kanyakumari Sea continues to influence weather conditions across the state. Under its impact, heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds is expected over the Coimbatore hill regions and isolated parts of the Nilgiris.

Moderate rainfall with strong winds has also been forecast at isolated places across northern Tamil Nadu, while light rain is likely at a few locations in the southern districts.

According to meteorologists, prevailing atmospheric conditions remain favourable for scattered rainfall over several parts of the state, offering some relief from the prevailing heat, particularly in the interior districts.

In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy, with moderate rainfall likely in a few localities during the evening and night. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense showers and gusty winds, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.

Despite the rain forecast, heatwave-like conditions persisted across many parts of the state on Monday. Seven weather stations recorded maximum temperatures above 37.7 degrees Celsius, indicating continued hot and humid conditions.

The highest maximum temperature of 38.9 degrees Celsius was recorded in Cuddalore and Vellore. Tiruttani, Nagapattinam and Parangipettai also experienced high daytime temperatures.

Chennai remained sweltering on Monday, with the mercury rising above 37.8 degrees Celsius. Weather officials said daytime temperatures in the city are likely to remain above this level on Tuesday, despite the possibility of evening showers.

Meteorologists noted that such conditions are typical during the southwest monsoon, when intermittent rainfall often coincides with high temperatures and elevated humidity.

While the expected rainfall is likely to provide temporary respite from the heat in several districts, authorities have advised people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the afternoon sun, and exercise caution during thunderstorms and strong winds.

The RMC said it will continue to monitor the evolving weather system and issue further advisories if required. Residents, particularly those in hilly and vulnerable areas, have been urged to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
