PM Modi leads national celebration of International Day of Yoga in Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday led the national celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) at Kolkata’s iconic Red Road, joining thousands of participants in commemorating the global event dedicated to wellness, healthy living, and holistic well-being.

The International Day of Yoga 2026 is being observed across India and in countries around the world under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting the role of yoga in promoting physical health, mental well-being, and active living at every stage of life.

This year’s theme reflects the growing global focus on healthy ageing amid rising life expectancy and increasing concerns over non-communicable diseases and lifestyle-related health issues. The emphasis is shifting from merely extending lifespan to improving health span, quality of life, and overall well-being through preventive and holistic approaches such as yoga.

India and yoga share a bond that spans thousands of years. Rooted in the country’s ancient spiritual and philosophical traditions, yoga has evolved into a globally embraced practice that promotes physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Recognising its universal appeal and transformative benefits, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. The proposal, introduced by PM Modi during the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, received unprecedented support from 175 member states. The first International Day of Yoga was observed on June 21, 2015.

The landmark recognition acknowledged India’s enduring contribution to global wellness and helped elevate yoga from an ancient tradition to a worldwide movement celebrated across continents.

Over the past decade, the International Day of Yoga has emerged as one of the world’s largest public wellness initiatives, bringing together millions of people each year in a shared commitment to health, mindfulness, and harmony.

The 12th edition of the event once again showcased yoga’s universal message of unity and well-being, reinforcing India’s role as the birthplace of a practice that continues to inspire and benefit people across the globe.
