India Meteorological Department (IMD) | forecast heavy rainfall | strong winds likely in Nilgiris

Heavy rain, strong winds likely in Nilgiris as low-pressure trough influences Tamil Nadu weather

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district, while several other parts of the state are likely to receive showers under the influence of a low-pressure trough extending from south Gujarat to central Kerala.

The weather system is expected to bring rainfall at isolated places across Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry over the next few days, the IMD said.

The department warned that the Nilgiris, a hilly district vulnerable to rain-related incidents during the southwest monsoon, may witness intense spells of rain along with gusty winds.

Other districts located along the Western Ghats are also likely to experience moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the weather office.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, especially in regions prone to landslides, falling trees and waterlogging.

The southwest monsoon has remained active over parts of southern India, with the trough from south Gujarat to central Kerala expected to enhance moisture flow over the region, leading to increased cloud formation and intermittent rainfall across several districts.

In Chennai, the IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies throughout the day, with light rain likely in some areas. Temperatures are expected to remain moderate due to cloud cover, though humidity levels are likely to stay high.

The weather department said rainfall activity may continue intermittently over parts of northern and western Tamil Nadu in the coming days, while widespread heavy rainfall is not expected outside the hilly regions.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a marine weather advisory for fishermen operating in the Andaman Sea. Strong winds with speeds of up to 55 kmph are likely over the region from July 10 to July 12.

Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution while venturing into the sea and follow weather advisories issued by authorities. The IMD said sea conditions could turn rough due to strengthening winds and urged fishing communities to plan their activities accordingly.

The weather department said it is closely monitoring the evolving system and will issue further advisories if conditions change.
