IMD warns of heavy to very heavy rain in four Himachal districts, issues public advisory

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday warned of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in four districts of Himachal Pradesh and advised residents and tourists to remain cautious as active monsoon conditions could trigger waterlogging, traffic disruptions and hazardous road conditions.

According to the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Shimla, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Shimla districts are likely to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Isolated heavy rainfall has also been forecast for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Solan and Kullu districts.

The weather office said the expected rainfall could lead to localised waterlogging in low-lying areas, slippery roads, poor visibility, traffic congestion and temporary disruption of essential services and routine outdoor activities.

The IMD has advised people to follow traffic advisories, avoid visiting vulnerable areas, maintain a safe distance from rivers and other water bodies, stay updated with the latest weather bulletins, and strictly adhere to advisories issued by the state government.

The department clarified that the warning was based on the previous day’s initial atmospheric conditions and said an updated forecast and advisory would be issued after reviewing the latest weather parameters.

The IMD urged residents and tourists, particularly in districts likely to receive intense rainfall, to remain vigilant as the monsoon continues to remain active across the state.

Earlier, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla had forecast an increase in monsoon activity across Himachal Pradesh from July 5 and issued orange and yellow alerts for heavy rainfall in different parts of the state until July 12.

Several areas of Himachal Pradesh received rainfall over the past 24 hours, leading to flood-like conditions in some places and disrupting normal life. Traffic on several national highways was temporarily affected due to debris accumulation following the rain. Vehicular movement was later restored after authorities cleared the affected stretches.

Meanwhile, according to the IMD, Kalpa in the tribal Kinnaur district recorded a minimum temperature of 14.2 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 24.4 degrees Celsius.
