Indian Railways approves ₹228 crore doubling of Tadali–Ghugus rail section in Maharashtra

Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 14-km Tadali–Ghugus railway section in Maharashtra at a cost of ₹228 crore to enhance freight capacity and improve operational efficiency on the Delhi–Chennai High Density Network (HDN).

The project has been sanctioned under the umbrella programme for doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyover and bypass works aimed at augmenting the capacity of the railway network.

The Tadali–Ghugus section is currently a single-line stretch on the Wardha–Balharshah route, which forms part of the Delhi–Chennai HDN corridor. The doubling project is expected to improve train operations and cater to the growing demand for freight movement on the route.

The section primarily handles freight traffic, including coal, iron ore, gypsum, petroleum products (IOBT POL), sand and laterite ash, among other commodities. The additional line will significantly increase capacity and ease congestion on the busy corridor.

According to the Railways, the project is expected to facilitate additional freight traffic of 4.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), strengthening logistics efficiency and supporting economic activity in the region.

The approval is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to expand network capacity, improve freight transportation and strengthen critical rail infrastructure across the country.
