Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) | Light to moderate rain | humidity to persist in Tamil Nadu

Light to moderate rain likely over Western Ghat districts; heat, humidity to persist in Tamil Nadu

Light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days, while most parts of the state are expected to witness dry weather with above-normal temperatures, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said.

In its latest weather bulletin, the RMC attributed the possibility of rainfall to variations in the speed of prevailing westerly winds.

According to the forecast, isolated areas in the Western Ghats districts may receive light to moderate showers between July 13 and July 18. The rest of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, is likely to remain largely dry during this period, though isolated locations may experience brief spells of light rain.

The weather department has warned that maximum temperatures are expected to remain above normal in several parts of the region. From July 13 to July 16, daytime temperatures at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to be 2 to 4 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average.

Meteorologists have cautioned that high temperatures combined with elevated humidity could result in heat discomfort, particularly in coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Residents have been advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and take necessary precautions during peak afternoon hours.

The RMC said the prevailing conditions are likely to lead to sultry weather across several coastal areas despite limited rainfall activity. High humidity levels, along with rising daytime temperatures, may make outdoor activities uncomfortable.

In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are expected, with the maximum temperature likely to remain around 38-39 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature between 28 and 29 degrees Celsius.

The weather office advised residents, especially children, senior citizens and those with existing health conditions, to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during the hottest part of the day and maintain adequate fluid intake.

Rainfall activity is expected to remain largely restricted to the Western Ghats districts, while weather officials continue to monitor atmospheric conditions for any significant changes.
