Moderate rain likely over Tamil Nadu’s Western Ghat districts for next two days: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall in Tamil Nadu’s Western Ghats districts over the next two days, with isolated areas likely to witness thundershowers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.

The weather conditions are being influenced by a low-pressure trough extending from southern Gujarat to central Kerala, the IMD said in its latest bulletin.

According to the weather department, one or two places along the Western Ghats are likely to receive moderate rain, along with thunderstorms and strong surface winds during the next 48 hours.

The prevailing weather system is expected to create unstable conditions over the hilly districts, prompting authorities and residents to remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to landslides and localised flooding.

For the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry, the IMD has forecast light rainfall at isolated places during the same period. While widespread heavy rainfall is not expected, brief spells of showers may occur in some districts due to local weather variations.

In Chennai and adjoining areas, generally cloudy skies are likely over the next two days. However, significant rainfall is not expected, though isolated light showers may occur in some locations. The city is likely to experience warm and humid conditions despite cloud cover.

The IMD has also forecast above-normal maximum temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in several parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the Karaikal region.

Meteorologists said the combination of high temperatures and increased humidity could lead to uncomfortable weather conditions, particularly in coastal and interior areas.

The IMD said the low-pressure trough from southern Gujarat to central Kerala continues to influence moisture flow over southern India, creating favourable conditions for rainfall in the Western Ghats while limiting precipitation in other parts of the state.

Residents in hilly districts have been advised to exercise caution during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel through landslide-prone areas in case of heavy showers.

The weather department has also urged people to take precautions against lightning and strong winds during thunderstorm activity. The IMD said it is closely monitoring the situation and will issue updated forecasts or warnings if weather conditions change significantly.
