V-P Radhakrishnan urges young scientists to drive innovation for Viksit Bharat at NISER graduation ceremony

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday called upon young scientists to harness science and innovation for nation-building, saying scientific capability is “not optional but foundational” to achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Addressing the 15th Graduation Ceremony of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), the Vice-President said institutions devoted to fundamental sciences are critical for strengthening India’s knowledge economy, technological advancement, national security and sustainable development.

Describing NISER as an institution that reflects India’s aspirations in science, innovation and intellectual leadership, he said the institute has emerged as a premier centre for scientific education and research while contributing significantly to building a highly skilled scientific workforce.

Highlighting global challenges such as climate change, emerging diseases and rapid advances in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and advanced materials, Vice-President Radhakrishnan said science must not only generate knowledge but also guide policymaking and ensure sustainable development.

The Vice-President stressed the need for greater interdisciplinary collaboration, saying today’s complex challenges cannot be solved within the boundaries of a single discipline. Urging graduating students to remain curious, uphold integrity and use their knowledge for the larger good, he said science is not only about finding answers but also about asking the right questions.

The V-P said India’s achievements in space exploration, vaccine development, digital public infrastructure and renewable energy have established the country as an emerging global leader in science and innovation. He urged the graduates to balance ambition with responsibility and progress with compassion, adding that their research and integrity would shape the future of society.

Paying tribute to physicist Dr Homi J. Bhabha, the Vice-President recalled that his untimely demise was a major setback to India’s atomic research programme. However, he said the country emerged stronger from that tragedy and has become one of the world’s leading nations in atomic research.

Expressing confidence in the graduating students, he said many of them could become the next generation of scientists who would make significant contributions to India’s scientific and technological advancement.

The ceremony was attended by Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh, Department of Atomic Energy Secretary Ajit Kumar Mohanty, NISER Director H.N. Ghosh, faculty members, students and their families.
