Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a meeting with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, with discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, defence, security, critical technologies and other key areas.
The meeting took place during the second leg of Modi’s three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. The Prime Minister arrived in Australia on Wednesday and received a warm welcome from the Indian community, which organised cultural programmes highlighting the shared heritage and close ties between the two countries.
A key highlight of the reception was a performance by the Australian-India Orchestra, which presented the patriotic song Maa Tujhe Salaam. Sharing a video of the performance on X, Modi said the presentation reflected how music strengthens the bond between the people of India and Australia.
“My compliments to every member of the orchestra for this memorable performance. It also shows the global popularity of Vande Mataram, particularly at a time when we are marking its 150th anniversary,” he said.
Modi also witnessed a unique musical performance featuring Australia’s traditional didgeridoo and India’s tabla, performed by didgeridoo artist Ron Murray and tabla maestro Dr Sam Evans.
“The harmony between these two timeless instruments beautifully reflected the deep cultural connect between our two nations,” Modi said while praising the artists for preserving and celebrating musical traditions.
During the community reception, the Prime Minister also watched a Kathak performance and shared photographs with the performers. He said Indian dance forms were gaining popularity across Australia.
“Delighted to witness an outstanding Kathak performance during the welcome by the Indian community in Melbourne. Glad to see Indian dances becoming popular across Australia,” Modi posted on X.
Modi’s visit to Australia follows his engagements in Indonesia, the first stop of his three-nation tour. During his three-day stay, the two leaders are expected to discuss ways to expand bilateral cooperation in defence and security, trade and investment, education, mobility, and people-to-people ties.
In his departure statement, Modi had said the visit would provide an opportunity to further deepen collaboration with Australia in emerging and critical technologies, sports and sports science.
After completing his engagements in Australia, the Prime Minister will travel to New Zealand, the final destination of his three-nation tour.
