Union Minister Ravneet Singh reviews preparations at Jalandhar Cantt station ahead of PM Modi’s visit

Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh on Wednesday inspected the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station along with senior officials of the Ferozepur Division to review preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit on July 17.

During the inspection, Singh reviewed arrangements for the inauguration of the station redevelopment project and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the modernisation initiative, describing it as a landmark development for Punjab.

In a post on X, Singh said, “Reviewed the preparations at Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station today for the proposed visit of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji. Along with senior officers of the Ferozepur Division, we reviewed and finalised every aspect of the arrangements. Directed the Railway officials to leave no stone unturned in ensuring flawless preparations and the highest standards of safety, security and passenger convenience for this important visit.”

The 110-year-old Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station has been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at an estimated cost of ₹125 crore. The project aims to preserve the station’s architectural heritage while incorporating design elements reflecting Punjab’s cultural identity.

The upgraded station features a spacious double-height air concourse, steel platform roofing, slip-resistant flooring, energy-efficient LED lighting, improved access from both sides of the city, and two new foot overbridges measuring 6 metres and 9 metres in width.

The redevelopment includes a 40-metre-wide trough roof covering 200 metres of platform area spread across 8,720 square metres, a 36-metre-wide air concourse covering 1,770 square metres, a newly developed second entry with a 300-square-metre station building, and a 4,855-square-metre parking facility.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Singh said the redeveloped station would serve as a symbol of modern and passenger-friendly railway infrastructure in Punjab.

The station currently handles an average daily footfall of around 7,500 passengers, with 66 pairs of trains halting at the facility. These include two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains, one Humsafar Express, one Garib Rath Express, along with several Mail, Express and passenger trains. The station is dedicated exclusively to passenger services and does not handle goods traffic.

Singh also highlighted the enhanced passenger facilities, including the large steel-structured concourse and air concourse designed to provide a comfortable, weather-protected travel experience and improve connectivity between both sides of the city.

During the inspection, the Minister reviewed passenger amenities and ongoing arrangements, expressing satisfaction with the progress of redevelopment work. He said the upgraded station would improve passenger convenience while reflecting Indian Railways’ focus on safe, accessible and world-class infrastructure.
