Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday celebrated World Rhino Day, highlighting India’s efforts towards the protection and conservation of the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
The Prime Minister lauded those working at the forefront of rhino conservation and noted that Assam now accounts for nearly 80 per cent of the world’s rhino population.
He also appreciated the efforts in Kaziranga to combat rhino poaching and protect the species.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said rhinos have either returned or are being well protected in parts of Bihar and West Bengal. He also highlighted the successful reintroduction of rhinos in Dudhwa, Uttar Pradesh, describing it as a historic achievement.
The Prime Minister said these developments reflect the sustained commitment towards animal protection and active wildlife management across the rhino range states.
He further announced the initiation of Project Rhino, aimed at taking species conservation efforts forward in the country.
Under the initiative, financial and technical support will be provided to rhino range states for protection, habitat management, genetic improvement and better understanding of population dynamics.
The Prime Minister said the initiative will further strengthen efforts towards the long-term conservation of the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
